Goals Profile

These are my future goals which are fairly general at this early point. I know the type of work I would like to do but have no specific aspirations toward a company. My main, over-spanning goal is to have a career doing work that I love to provide for my family (the most important thing in my life).

Where am I now? : I came into this program having worked in the retail industry for 6 years and full-time in a management role of some kind for 10 years. I have acquired a great deal of professional experience but was unhappy in my current role and wanting to get something more from my professional life. I wanted to have a lasting and fulfilling career in an industry I enjoyed and so decided to return to school. I had attended school before and obtained a diploma in Web Development but only ever pursued it in a freelance format.

Where am I going? : When I leave this course, I will have a sustainable career. This is my ultimate goal. I want to have a job that I can be happy doing, that pays relatively well, and allows my family to live a comfortable, happy life. I will obtain a career upon leaving the college that allows me all of these things.

How will I get there? : I will complete all of my courses at NSCC with exemplary marks, have excellent attendance, and become more involved with community and campus life. I will practice the skills required to achieve a position within the IT industry on a daily basis and form relationships within the industry that will allow me to break through “the wall”. I have already begun some of these relationships with instructors at the college.

Where will I be in 5 years? : I will be a practiced, experienced IT professional within the industry, valued by my peers and considered a leader because of my extensive management experience. I will have applied this in my position to become a team lead for the IT team I am working with and a candidate for further promotion to Project Manager.

Where will I be in 10 years? : I will be Project Manager or IT Dept. Manager for a department within my place of work, respected by peers and employees, counted on for my knowledge and experience to be able to lead a division and provide support to new employees who need it, possibly in charge of hiring within my group.
